No Californian should suffer or die from illnesses that can be prevented or treated, simply because of where they were born. Despite the the Affordable Care Act and a recent CA law that provides undocumented children with healthcare, hundreds of thousands of undocumented California adults are still blocked from access to affordable health coverage. But there is a movement to change that.
A majority of Californians support expanding Medi-Cal and Covered California to include all low-income Californians, regardless of their immigration status. Why? Because providing EVERYONE access to affordable, quality health coverage is not only the right thing to do, it is also cost-effective, and good for the economy and the health of our state. Here are the facts:
- Undocumented Californians are the economic engine for our state. One in 10 workers are undocumented. They work hard and pay roughly $3.2 billion in taxes per year.
- Our healthcare system works best when everyone participates. If people aren’t able to get treated, diseases and illnesses can spread or become more serious.
A health care system that excludes anyone, hurts everyone. If the United States is ever to have a truly "universal" healthcare system, it needs to start in CA.
